I spent a few months working on a project with some peers at PNNL. We were tasked with creating a handheld device that would pair with special optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) tags, allowing the user to verify the integrity of the tag when checking a package for evidence of tampering.
My primary role was developing the overall body, key aspects being form and comfort, support of internal electronic components, and the tag-reading chamber, ensuring it was isolated and dark when the tag was inserted. We created multiple prototypes and after deciding on a direction with our PNNL sponsors, developed a 3D printable design allowing these readers to be easily and quickly produced.
